It was on this day in 1863 that the Superior Junta (led by the triumvirate of generals Almonte, Salas and Archbishop Labastida) in Mexico City formally proclaimed Mexico a Catholic empire and to offer the crown of Mexico to the Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria.
